Help Your Child Do Better In School Through Music

By Fiona Lopez

Those who do not appreciate music may probably believe that it does nothing to help a child excel in school. Unlike subjects such as the sciences, mathematics and language arts, some consider music as a non-core or just a minor subject. However, it cannot be discounted that it is able to help stimulate the minds and bodies of students.

Studies have shown that music education has an impact in a child's intellectual development in terms of math and in other areas of the academics. It aids in the development of analytical planning that is needed to learn and comprehend mathematical problems. For example, it has been proven that students who have been taking piano lessons fare better than those who do not have any exposure to music lessons at all.

In general, children with music background tend to have higher scores in school than those who don't attend music lessons. This is one of the reasons why most schools nowadays incorporate music education programs as part of their academic curriculum. This paves the way for children to further enhance their competencies across all subject areas. They have an easy time in taking tests and in doing their school work and projects.

Children who have the ability to read musical notes and play an instrument, especially at an early age, function very well in other areas of their school life. But remember that besides the academics, music likewise enhances their self-confidence. Not everybody is given the opportunity to learn and be good in playing a musical instrument. A child who is already an expert in creating beautiful music with, for example, a violin, tends to have a higher regard for himself.

Another benefit that it gives is in the development and enhancement of the child's coordination as well as other motor skills. Kids exposed to music arts learn to perform rhythms. As a result, they are able to physically and mentally act more quickly and in a more precise manner. On top of this, discipline is instilled in them, making them more ready and eager to achieve success in any endeavor they choose.
