How to insert and remove your custom earplugs

By Dionne Payn

Now you have a set of custom earplugs your hearing protection company should have shown you how to wear them, how to insert them into your ears properly to ensure you get maximum protection and how to remove them. But just in case that didn't happen, here is a quick guide.

How to insert your earplugs

Right hand side

Your custom earplugs are shaped to have a small tip which is pushed into your ear canal, and a flat section which will point away from you while resting against your tragus, which is the small pointed extrusion located just above the ear lobe.

To insert the right hand hearing protector (which will be marked in red or R), grasp the hearing protector between your thumb and fore finger of the right hand, and place your thumb on the flat section as shown below.

Now, with your left hand reaching over your head, slightly pull your right ear in an upwards direction. Place the tip of the earplug into your ear canal and as you push it into the ear gently rotate it anti-clockwise by about 180 degrees. Give your ear a little wiggle to ensure that the earplug is forming an effective seal with your ear and that it is comfortable to wear. The flat section of the ear plug should be touching your tragus.

The left ear

The earplugs for your left ear may be a slightly different shape, but it still has a tip which sits inside your ear canal, and a flat part which should sit against your tragus.

The left earplug can be identified by being marked in blue, or with the letter 'L'. Pick it up between your thumb and forefinger and place your thumb by the flattened section.

Use the right hand to pull your left ear upwards, and insert the earplug while rotating it slowly. Once the earplug is sitting in your ear give it a wiggle to ensure a secure seal and make sure it is comfortable.

Some people find that it is easier to insert their earplugs if they use a small amount of otoform cream applied to the outside of the earplug. Especially if you are using them for the first time, or if you have just cleaned the earplugs. Take a small amount of the cream and using your finger carefully rub it all over your earplugs.

This will not only make it easier to slide the earplugs into your ears, but you will find that it helps to improve the quality of the seal between your ear canal and the custom earplug.

Earplug removal

Removal is very straight forward and easy. Simply use your thumb to gently push upwards at the base of your ear. You will find that the earplug will slide out of your ear and drop into your hand. Use the same process to remove the earplug from your other ear.
